While My Sister Sleeps

Delinsky flounders on her latest, a chronicle of how a family deals with a tragedy that befalls its favorite daughter. An Olympic marathon contender, self-centered Robin Snow often rubs her younger sister, Molly, the wrong way. After many years in her sister’s shadow, Molly takes out her resentment with petty actions, such as refusing to accompany Robin on a run. Fatefully, Robin has a heart attack while training and falls into a coma. As Robin’s condition fails to improve, Delinsky digs tediously into the family’s woes: Molly’s touchy relationship with Robin’s ambitious reporter ex-boyfriend; middle son Chris’s dealings with a would-be blackmailer; mother Kathryn’s trouble coming to terms with Robin’s dire prognosis. Delinsky litters the narrative with momentum-crippling scene-setting minutiae, and the Snow family, while theatrically intense in their interactions, make for flat characters. Delinsky is adept as portraying angst, but her story would have greatly benefited from a tighter telling and more complex characters. (Feb.)

1 Star What a mess!
I saw this epic race from Heartbreak Hill. I’m running my first Boston in a few weeks. But this book was just a huge mess. Instead of letting a dramatic story tell itself, the author felt compelled to jerk stories and time lines around to create artificial tension — when there’s more than enough in the stories he’s telling. It’s as if the chapters were dropped on a staircase and put back in a different order. Sometimes the next chapter goes back in time, sometimes it’s after the race. Ugh. And it’s not as if the author is a compelling or stylish enough writer to pull it off.
I’ve been reading about Boston in many places as part of my preparation, and this was a total waste of time.
5 Stars A Great Story About A Great Race
This is a great book on a true duel in the sun. The re-telling of the race which weaves the runners’ stories, both pre-race and post-race, works well, and is highly readable. If you’ve ever run a marathon, or love running, this book is for you.
5 Stars I loved this book!
I really loved this book. Opposed to the previous reviewer, I liked the way that the author told the story by alternating between the race, and interspersing the runners background between chapters. I felt like it gave the story pace and allowed the race to unfold.
Reading this book gave me the inspiration to train for a marathon which I actually completed last year. It’s an exciting book and I have recommended it to many of my friends. I hope you enjoy it too.
3 Stars Good coverage of a great story
I enjoyed the book, despite jumping among 4 stories (past and race from each runner’s perspective). I would have preferred a more traditional approach; i.e., a little history of each, the race, and the aftermath. But the author chooses. The unique approach somewhat detracted, but I’m glad I got the full story.
